Practical Effects of Temple Worship

Section 109 of the Doctrine and Covenants is the dedication prayer, received by revelation, for the Kirtland temple. In April of 2024, President Russell M. Nelson encouraged members of the church to study this section and look for ways the temple blesses us. Rather than delving into deep theology about temples and our activities there, I want to focus on my observations and experience from working in the temple for almost seven years.

A few months ago, the temple president approached me and asked how the temple had changed me. I thought for a second and answered, “Profoundly”. I couldn’t possibly list all the ways I have been affected by my temple experiences. Indeed, it is difficult to put into words many of the things I have felt. Some are subtle and others are more obvious. The following is not a complete list of the effects of consistent and frequent temple worship and service.

The most obvious thing I have noticed is that I never leave the temple in a bad mood or with negative thoughts. While in this positive state, I am kinder to my sweet wife. I choose my words more carefully. I am less concerned about myself and more concerned about others. I smile more at strangers. I am less judgmental and more understanding, knowing that they have struggles I cannot understand.

Next, I am less inclined to deviate from the gospel through temptation. I avoid inappropriate language and images that pervade every form of online content. I am more inclined to search out uplifting and educational content.

Sometimes, I want to be contentious and disagreeable with those who criticize the church and our unique doctrines. Because of the things I learn in the temple, I find ways to disagree without being disagreeable. I try to find kind ways to articulate the doctrine and practices of the restored gospel more convincingly.

I take covenant-making and keeping more seriously. I see how temple ceremonies bring to life a depth of meaning and purpose that I cannot get in any other way. I see that I am becoming a different person, less concerned about the challenges of daily life and more concerned about eternal realities.

I read scriptures and hear talks from church leaders differently. I can read between the lines better. I see and understand things that are unspoken and unexplainable. I am less concerned about what the Brethren do not say, and I am more convinced that they are doing their best to teach us how to live in an uncertain world.

I have a greater appreciation for the restoration of the gospel through the prophet Joseph Smith. In the temple, we are told that it is the place where the mysteries of God are made manifest. I know that is right.

I feel the influence of the Holy Ghost more and more each day. I pay more attention to promptings that I receive. As a result, I make better decisions.

I hope that you will find this helpful and motivating to increase your time in the temple. I hope you will experience a profound change like I have experienced. It is wonderful.
